The purpose of this Virtual Session series is to a) share the findings of new Community Development research conducted by the FIU Metropolitan Center; and, b) to engage Community Development professionals throughout Florida on ways to effectively implement a more effective framework for Community Development practice.
The research conducted by the FIU Metropolitan Center was constructed on the premise that in an economy with shrinking opportunities for low- and moderate-income families, income inequality and a dearth of affordable housing, the Community Development sector must devise new methods commensurate with the scope and nature of the problem.
As such, a new Community Development framework would help build local economies, improve access to new and higher wage employment, re-focus and set right public education and job-readiness, improve healthcare access and expand housing choice and opportunity at the neighborhood level.
And the only way to create this new framework is by including all those who lead Community Development and Financial Capability initiatives in our Florida communities in the creation of the future!
The content of the two-part Virtual Session series will consist of the following:
Virtual Session I – The Case for Creating a New Framework for Community Development Practice
The first session will discuss the need and purpose for designing a new framework for Community Development practice. Expert Dr. Ned Murray will present key findings on deficiencies, challenges and opportunities. The session will address the following specific issues:
- What are the critical functions of Community Development, and how do they interrelate?
- Local institutional capacity – what are the essential elements?
- Assessing a city/county’s Community Development delivery system
- Community Development areas of major focus and opportunity
- Challenges and opportunities for implementing a “New Community Development Framework”
This Part I of II virtual sessions in the series will serve as a lead-in to the FPP 2019 Regional Prosperity Roundtables to be held in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, as well as Naples, Tampa and Orlando, among possible others. In those live, immersive sessions, Roundtable participants will deeply in a dialogue and potential action planning around the results of the research from the FIU research team.
